Rumour: Virtua Fighter Reboot Is in Development

We've been yearning for a new Virtua Fighter game for over a decade now, but it seems like the long break will come to an end eventually.

Midori, a well known SEGA leaker who often posts reliable information, has posted about various projects going on at the studio, from upcoming Atlus projects, to rough outlines of the SEGA titles that were shown during the game awards.

When someone asked about the fate of Virtua Fighter, they said that a reboot is in the works, and that it is being developed by the series veterans. What's interesting is that it seems like this reboot, if real, is shooting for the modern standards for fighting games. Heavier emphasis on single player content for casual players, while still maintaining focus on competition.

Given that SEGA has been going hard on various reboots, remakes, and remasters, it doesn't seem all that unlikely that Virtua Fighter would be one of the classic franchises that they plan to revive. However, with 2026 and 2027 mentioned as potential release dates for Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi, it could mean that Virtua Fighter is quite some ways off from release, since it wasn't even shows off like all those other projects.
