The recent addition of Christiano Ronaldo to the roster of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves has no doubt raised a lot of questions. Questions like "what is a soccer player doing in my Garou sequel?" or "why did they add a real guy with two rape allegations to this game?" but rest assured, his inclusion makes more sense than you might realize.
The new interview with Ronaldo reveals that he's a massive fan of the Fatal Fury series, so to finally be a character within the game must've been a dream come true.
The star of kicking the ball into the net had this to say about the game:
Q: What is your take on this collab?
A: It's great, first time in a traditional fighting game. It's a big game, so I'm happy to be part of it.
Ronaldo hits the nail on the head here. This is indeed the first time he's making an appearance in a traditional fighting game, or fighting game in general. As for Fatal Fury, the audience does tend to describe it as "the big game," with quotes like "the big game is coming!" or "can't wait to strike foes in my big game!" often permeating any City of the Wolves discussion.
Q: What was it like seeing yourself as a fighter in the game?
A: Using my football moves in a fight, it's exciting, very cool.
The passion is practically dripping from every word of this answer. In very few words, Ronaldo manages to say so much, like a warrior poet who exerts his body on the field of battle and then channels their intense experience into the written word. Speaking of warriors, Ronaldo might even pick up some new ideas from Fatal Fury and use them in his future matches. Thus far, the star athlete has only used his elbows, fists, and legs when getting into fights both on and outside the field, but City of the Wolves shows that even balls can be deadly if you know where to shoot them.
Q: Do you have a favorite move in the game?
A: The special moves, of course. They are strong, like me.
You know, a random celebrity or athlete who was only added to the game on a whim of Saudi government's sportswashing efforts, would likely give us some generic line about a "dragon punch" or "fireball," but that's not Ronaldo. He knows his stuff, and has clearly played his fair share of fighting games. "The special moves" might not be the most popular or well known move in the game, but it's something that us core fighting game fans really love.
Q: Do you have a message for CR7 and Fatal Fury fans?
A: I always want to give the fans something special, you will enjoy this. It's a new challenge, a new level.
Now, it's not exactly clear what Ronaldo is giving here, since it doesn't seem like he did literally anything for the game's production. Not face scans, not mocap, not even voice acting. Perhaps it's more of a philosophical statement on his way of life, maybe he is "always giving something special" to everyone around him, even if they don't want it or tell him to stop.
You can watch and feel Ronaldo challenge the residents of South Town and escalate thing to a new level on April 28, be there or be square!
