SNK has just published Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers on Steam. The port is once again done by Code Mystics, who have done a great job with them in the past, and as you might expect, it comes with a few additional online features.
Aside from the now expected rollback netcode, it also features support for different tournament standards, with single match, double elimination, and league play. The actual content of the game remains unchanged, but there are some nice additions like the gallery mode with original illustrations, achievements, and hitbox viewer in practice mode.
By itself, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 is one of the more popular games in the series, with a respectable roster of 23 characters, and gameplay that refines the balance and mechanics of previous entries.
With that said, the sentiment around this release is mixed at best. With Saudi Arabia owning SNK and showing more influence in the development of City of the Wolves, some players have mixed feelings about supporting this release. There is also a currently ongoing issue about the potential use of generative AI imagery with the art used for achievements.
That situation is currently developing, with Code Mystics denying the use of AI generated assets, but is yet to provide convincing refutation. We'll have more on that later.
