Almost the whole FGC is talking about the same thing right now. Daigo Umehara, one of the greatest fighting game players in history, going up in a FT10 against MenaRD, the greatest Street Fighter player of today.'
Hyperboles aside, it's a curious situation. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more beloved player than Daigo. Not only was he one of the pioneers in the world of competitive fighting games, but he also served as a massive inspiration for thousands of people, both through his gameplay and his book that described his competitive philosophy.
It's not an exaggeration to say that he reached an almost mythical status after decades of competing. Even if he might not show the best results in SF6 and SFV as much as he used to in older titles, many believe that when it comes to a long set that Daigo can prepare for, you cannot beat him. And indeed, he has an impressive record when it comes to longer sets that test a player's endurance, adaptation, and observation.
Meanwhile, MenaRD is undisputable one of if not the best Street Fighter player at the moment. Both in SFV and SF6, he is borderline undefeatable, and he only got stronger over the years.
This makes for an interesting dynamic. A revered pro that hasn't put up any great results recently, versus a modern legend of Street Fighter. If you look at it pragmatically, or maybe cynically, it might seem like a pointless fight that is stacked against Daigo, but if there is whimsy in your heart, I know you're hoping for the old guy to go through a little training montage and prove to everything that he still got it.
The new mini-documentary from EvoFGC might help you to get into the right mind for the latter, as it details Daigo's journey to where he is today, and really puts into perspective how remarkable he is as a player and as a person.
