Area Zero offers a less common take on traditional 2D fighters.
A new indie fighting game recently released on Steam in Early Access. Area Zone is a combo heavy 2D fighter that mostly sticks to the classics but has one fairly uncommon design of removing walls. Instead of getting cornered, you're fighting in infinitely scrolling 2D arenas.
There's no sugarcoating the art style, it sort of has the look of a high effort Newgrounds flash game that threw flat colors and on 3D backgrounds and characters made from tracing references or something.
To the game's credit, the animation, effects, and sound all make it significantly more satisfying in motion and far outweigh any other visual shortcomings.
If you're into unique takes on fighting games, this might be worth checking out, though keep in mind that it's an offline only fighting game. You can play against AI and do combo trials, or invite one of your friends for a local VS.
