Metacritic published the list of 20 Best Nintendo Switch Games of 2023. These games gained the highest scores from professional reviewers. Fighting games are also represented in this list, but in quite an unexpected way. The eighth place is taken by an interactive documentary, The Making of Karateka. Karateka is a 1984 action game for Apple II, which greatly influenced the fighting games genre since it was one of the first games.

Metacritic quotes IGN: "Before playing The Making of Karateka, I had no interest in Karateka beyond it being a historical stepping stone to Prince of Persia. But I get it now. ... Karateka is significant, but the story behind it is remarkable, and The Making of Karateka tells that story in the coolest way possible."
