The new tag fighter is off to a difficult start.
Marvel Tokon has been a major topic of discussion in the FGC this past week. While this is expected for a new game, most of those topics are not all that positive, with the release period that was marked with complaints from PC players about the game's poor performance, and console players talking about terrible crossplay experience and slow que times with crossplay turned off.
While ASW has very quickly responded to feedback and addressed most pressing issues, the port is still not doing great, and it undoubtedly affected the game's overall momentum. Tokon currently has 5k reviews on Steam, with only 48% of those reviews being positive.
This has no doubt affected the game's sales, which, according to market analyst Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics, total up to 485k copies a week after release.
Not the worst launch for a fighting game, but also unlikely to be what Sony and ASW were hoping for, given the game's marketing and lavish production. For comparison, Street Fighter 6 sold 1 million in 5 days, and while Tekken 8 doesn't seem to have data for a comparable timeframe, it still managed to sell 2 millions in its first month.
Obviously those are some of the biggest games in the genre, and for a smaller release 500k copies is still worth celebrating, but it's unlikely that Sony holds this title to those smaller expectations.
When it comes to player numbers, they dropped quite a bit since release, but not in a way that's meaningfully different from other fighting games or most multiplayer games in general. While it's steadily going down, it's probably going to stabilize at a level comparable to early Strive, and that's only counting PC players, with the data suggesting that most players are on PS5.
The game's future is still somewhat uncertain, but hopefully it performs well enough to be sustainable for ASW.
