In a recent 4Gamer interview, Kazutoshi Sekine and Takeshi Yamanaka from Arc System Works shared some details about the upcoming fighter.
Many questions and answers in that interview were things that many of us have already heard, knew, or expected, but there are a few specific bits of information that are worth focusing on.
First and foremost, one of the most interesting points here is about the story mode. When the interview originally came out, it became major news that the story mode would have 10 hours of motion comics but no gameplay.
4Gamer has since corrected the article and clarified that it will contain normal fighting game matches throughout, and naturally, they will be connected to the story happening in the comics.
Although admittedly, how much does that really add to the story mode? Tekken 8 managed to make the story mode battles more satisfying by doubling down on Tekken 7's direction of unique story mode matches with their own bosses and special mechanics.
Without that, you're simply beating up CPU before going back to cutscenes, or in this case, the motion comic. ArcSys is also not new to less involved story modes, with Strive story mode being entirely cutscenes, and both Xrd and BlazBlue titles being dominated by VN sections.
Regardless, 10 hours is quite a lot, so it seems like they are actually committed to delivering a fleshed out story in the Marvel universe.
Aside from that there are still some neat details to gleam here. For example, another answer pointed out that they initially thought a 1v1 game would be fine, but then it was decided that 1v1 is just not Marvel.
If you think about it, that's true not just for the classic MvC games that were all either tag or assist fighters. Comic books also often contain different heroes and villains working together, with major events usually having a gigantic roster of characters grouping up. Same goes for Marvel movies. Many people will think of Avengers first and foremost, which is a series of movies that always focused on big scale.
With that in mind, it only made sense to do a tag fighter, but they went a step further and tried to do something unusual by making 4v4 cast work, and some of the things you might find strange will likely be the result of figuring out this format.
