Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Beta Adds Quick Tag and More Combo Routes
It seems that feedback after the previous beta led Arc System Works developers to work on making Marvel Tokon a lot more dynamic and fast paced.

The next Closed Beta for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is rapidly approaching. Next week, from December 5 at 12:00 AM PT / 8:00 AM GMT / 5:00 PM JST and until December 8 at 7:59 AM GMT / 4:59 PM JST, you will be able to once again get some matches* into ASW's new tag fighter.

* - that is, as long as you are on PlayStation 5, and get lucky enough to receive an invite. If you got one for the previous beta, don't sweat it, you're already in.

That said, let's get to the important part, what's new in this upcoming Closed Beta? Well, they actually prepared a list of everything that you should expect, including what's new and what stayed:

  • Two new playable characters, Spider-Man and Ghost Rider, with their lobby avatars – each lobby avatar will have an alternate color!

  • Don't worry, Captain America, Iron Man, Storm, Doctor Doom, Ms. Marvel, and Star-Lord are all here too. Bringing the total of playable characters in this beta to 8!

  • Two new stages, the magnificent X-Mansion and the prehistoric Savage Land
  • Marvel’s New York City stage will also be available to select.
  • 72 hours of non-stop action from December 5 to December 7 PT
  • First 48 hours include CPU Battles with selectable difficulty and online lobby matches
  • Last 24 hours dedicated to online lobby matches
  • New Quick Tag mechanic with added quick-action adjustments to improve responsiveness

  • Added a new quick-action button ‘Quick Tag’, allowing smoother character swapping during battles

  • Added new routes to Link Attacks, including new manual input options that do not trigger automatically.
  • Added Quick Entry feature in the Open Lobby
  • You can now join a match stand against players of similar skill level with a single button, allowing for smoother matchmaking. If a match stand of your skill level isn’t available, you will automatically join an open match stand instead.

One of the most hotly discussed changes here is the addition of the new Quick Tag mechanic. It's not clear what this means or how this works, but most people seem to read as an alternative mid-combo/blockstring tag that will be much faster than the current version, which significantly slows down the action. That said, Marvel Tokon already has an overwhelming number of buttons involved, so it's interesting how they plan to fit this new bind into the current scheme.

Another very important change is the addition of new routes. This is somewhat similar to Melty Blood: Type Lumina, where even if you didn't make use of auto-combos, certain parts of the combo structure still relied on the attack that was exclusive to the auto-combo system. Giving players more control over their routing is a massive game-changer, so anyone who felt that the room for creativity was a bit cramped in the previous beta might enjoy this one a lot more.
