Kobayan Wins Dreamhack Atlanta 2026 and Books His Place at the EWC
The Zangief specialist defeats Nephew in Grand Finals after a reset to claim one of the year's most coveted qualification spots

Saishunkan Sol Kumamoto's Kobayan has emerged as the winner of Dreamhack Atlanta 2026, claiming a spot in the Esports World Cup in the process.

Kobayan defeated American star Nephew in Grand Finals after fighting back from a loss to force a reset, meaning both players started the final game on equal footing before Kobayan took the decisive set.

Kobayan, who plays Zangief, is one of the very few players to have won more than one high-level tournament with the character. This marks his first top-rated tournament win since his breakthrough success at Topanga Championship 5 in 2024.

One of the Most Stacked Tournaments of the Year

Dreamhack Atlanta has grown considerably in prestige in recent years, largely off the back of the Esports World Cup and its highly rewarding prize pool. The prospect of EWC qualification has made players far more willing to travel to tournaments like Dreamhack that did not always command international attention. The result was a bracket of 123 players, with roughly half being notable professionals. There were very few dud matches from start to finish.

Nephew took second place and also secured his EWC qualification by virtue of his finishing position. The rest of the top 8 featured Jr., who is another Zangief player and whose presence alongside Kobayan made for a fascinating dynamic within the bracket, as well as Dual Kevin, Kushina, Vxbao, Ryukichi, and Shigematsu.

For the players who were unable to secure qualification spots, there is little time to dwell on the disappointment. Combo Breaker 2026 takes place in just one week and is both an EWC and Capcom Cup qualifier. With 1,451 registrants, it is a significantly larger field than Dreamhack Atlanta, but that also means more opportunities for players to make their mark and put themselves back in contention.
