In just a little over a week, Invincible VS will finally launch their open beta, running from April 9 to 11. Sadly, this is only for consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. As previously stated, the company is worried about potential data mining if the beta is released on PC, and likely opted in for an earlier launch than delaying it for the sake of giving developers time to release a sanitized beta build.
Nevertheless, the open beta itself is surprisingly fully featured as far as fighting game betas go. You will be able to go online and participate in ranked mode, learn how to play in the tutorial, but also experience a fleshed out practice mode with hitboxes and frame data included.
Speaking of ranked, it seems like a decent amount of consideration went into making that a batter experience as well. It all starts with 10 placement matches to determine your skill lever, and from the way they word it, it seems like Invincible VS will follow a more traditional Elo/Glicko system instead of funny points that most fighting games choose for some reason.
What's not entirely clear is what they mean with Best of 3 sets. While the format has been standard for most fighting games at this point, only one of them has been brave enough to make people play a full set – Mortal Kombat.
If Invincible VS does go that route, it would be interesting to see the reactions. Obviously there need to be exceptions for poor connections, but other than that, anyone who wants to play competitively (it's ranked, after all) would likely prefer actual sets instead of one-and-dones that are so prevalent in modern fighters.
The cherry on top for the open beta is that best players will be able to claim their spot in the credits. There will be 20 special spots for those who prove themselves to be the best within this short, 3 day period, so you'll have to play your heart out to get there.
It's a really fascinating bit of motivation for people to check out the beta, but being slightly cynical here, something tells me that you will largely see some familiar faces. Namely, the pro players and content creators who play fighters for a living, and can dedicate this time to secure the bragging rights and a place in the game's history.
Though we'll be rooting for some dark horses to come out of nowhere and surprise everybody!
