The 1995 Super NES classic joins the Nintendo Classics lineup with 15 fighters and crossover nostalgia.

Nintendo announces Fatal Fury Special joins the Switch's SNES Classics, bringing SNK’s key 16-bit fighting game. Released in 1995 for SNES, it expanded on Fatal Fury 2 with a 15-character roster and improved battle system. The lineup features returning fighters like Terry, Andy, Mai, and Kim, plus new ones Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, and Laurence Blood. Players can face boss Wolfgang Krauser or unlock a crossover battle with Ryo Sakazaki, early shared universe in fighting games.

While modern audiences will know of SNK’s legacy with King of Fighters and Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Fatal Fury Special is a crucial bridge, introducing smoother animation, faster gameplay, and mechanics that influenced later titles. For fighting game fans, the Switch Online addition offers both a historic piece and an easy way to experience an early milestone. Alongside Mario & Wario and Bubsy in: Claws Encounters, it highlights Nintendo’s latest retro update, showing how far fighting games have come since their 16-bit origins.
