It has been over a year now since MultiVersus fully shut down, following what can only be described as a disastrous launch. While the game itself had obvious appeal and did interesting things with the platform fighter sub-genre, it couldn't have stepped on more rakes.
For starters, neither open betas nor the final game were available in most of the world, cutting off gigantic markets in Asia for no discernable reason. It also had the usual teething issues of a new fighting game. Like questionable balance direction, netcode issues, and handling of hitboxes, which led to some heated feedback.
Much of this maybe could've been overlooked, but the game already had fully functional cash shop and after people invested both time and money, it was taken offline for roughly half a year until proper launch. Launch that still had plenty of issues and even more aggressive monetization.
It didn't take long for the game to bleed out of both players and support from Warner Bros. but that didn't stop it from finding a pretty dedicated fan base that enjoyed a genuinely fresh take on the genre that is dominated by Smash Bros. and games that overtly try to mimic much of Smash Bros.
That's how we get to this day, with OpenVersus being close enough to release that the fans behind it are launching a promo for the Season 1 of the game's revival.
