Ed Boon Addresses the NetherRealm Tag Fighter Rumours
NRS isn't planning to dip into a new niche after the recent assist fighter.

We're gonna need a bit of context here. A while back, ten/o account on X posted an announcement about a closed playtest for an "unannounced AAA 2D fighting game."

The amount of circumstantial evidence piled up, leading to speculations that it could be Injustice 3, which Ed Boon was in no rush to deny, despite typically being quick to dismantle any speculations that might disappoint fans in the long term.

Skip a month, and another similar announcement pops up on ten/o account, this time for a 3v3, character oriented, competitive game.

You probably see where this is going, so people started thinking that the two might be related and the next NRS game is actually a tag fighter.

However, the 13+ age rating by itself sort of goes against that, and now Ed Boon chimed in to say that no, they're not working on a tag game. The timing here is pretty obvious, so while he doesn't directly state why he's bringing it up, it's still obvious.

It's probably for the best, as the recent craze of tag fighters led to a lot of games that immediately lost steam. We could theorize for days what exactly caused this, but the reality seems to be that these games just don't have enough appeal to recoup the costs of making one.

And when it comes to NetherRealm, they always shoot for something that would be palatable for the mainstream audience.
