Daigo Umehara Documentary Set to Release in Japanese Theatres in 2027

One of the greatest esports personalities of all time, Daigo Umehara, is going to get his own documentary.

The cat was let out of the bag in a post by a mysterious account called Re:Beast, which only posted its first tweet three days ago. The post hinted at something for the 29th, and now, here we are.

The announcement post featured a short teaser and gave some sparse details about the documentary.

Here’s what we know so far:

The documentary is to be called “Umehara, A Life Bet on 1/60th of a Second” (this was translated from Japanese, so there might be some changes to how it is called in English), and it will feature interviews with prominent players who have been involved with Daigo’s life.

Front and center in the teasers were Daigo’s teammates from the successful REJECT team that won Street Fighter League Japan and the World Championship: Tokido, Fuudo, and LeShar. There was also an interview with famous shoutcaster Aru.

The documentary will be feature-length, meaning it will have the chance to go in-depth on a larger-than-life character in Daigo, who is well known as the first-ever recognized professional fighting game player.

Daigo has been featured in two other documentaries before now, including 2017’s Living the Game, which was about 88 minutes long but bounced between Daigo, GamerBee, and Momochi to tell their stories. There was also a short, 11-minute 2016 documentary by Red Bull called Mind of a Beast, which delved into what makes Daigo who he is.

This project will focus solely on Daigo, which would be a treat, as his extensive experiences spanning over 20 years are rich with anecdotes and gems.

The most important fact, though, is that the documentary will be released in theatres across Japan on the 29th of January 2027.

There’s little else known about the project, but this is pretty good and, again, highlights just how seriously Japan seems to be platforming its FGC representatives.

Daigo is highly regarded within the community and is perhaps the safest bet for a project such as this.
