What's going on with DRM and modding of older Capcom titles?
According to posts on Steam forums, Capcom has added Enigma DRM to some of their older titles, with the suspected list including UMvC3, Resident Evil: Revelations, and DMCV.
Outside of the obvious issue of DRM never being in favor of the customer, this particular DRM can cause other issues like stutters, performance loss, and it can break modding on top of it.
I have tried to confirm the list of games that were impacted by this, but outside of speculations through SteamDB depot changes, there's no way to find anything definitive.
However, it seems safe to assume that the DRM was implemented in Resident Evil Revelations, and was promptly removes as per their Steam news post.
We'll have to wait and see how this evolves, but so far it's a fairly concerning event that looks worse when we look at the context. Not a long time ago, Capcom had a presentation where they expressed a concern over mods potentially harming the game's and company's reputation if the content includes something provocative or controversial.
There have also been several DMCA strikes on YouTube that were allegedly related to mods. I say allegedly because they didn't actually disclose any real reason for it, and while some videos including mods got taken down, thousands of others still remain. There are quite literally whole playlists of people showing cutscenes from Resident Evil with nude mods. If Capcom was truly targeting mod videos, you'd think that those would be some of the first to go, but alas.
For now, let's hope that the Enigma DRM situation was a genuine mistake, and higher ups at Capcom at the very least understand the value of modding, even if they might not approve of it.
