Popular fighting game Brawlhalla has announced it will soon launch a new system to allow players to earn free in-game rewards by watching short sponsored video advertisements.
The free rewards program, Sponsored Video Rewards, is currently in limited testing, but Brawlhalla developers say it will roll out more widely in the coming weeks. During testing, some North American Steam users have reported gaining access and being able to earn coins, emotes, and other items by watching videos.
Players who opt-in can watch 30-second sponsored video ads to steadily earn progress towards free rewards like skins, chests containing random items, and in-game currency. The system is designed to give users, especially those unable or unwilling to spend real money on the game, more ways to obtain Brawlhalla's cosmetic content.
The testing period has produced mixed reactions so far. Many players expressed excitement about the new free rewards on social media and Brawlhalla videos explaining the feature. However, some questioned how it will impact developer profits, and there is demand for expanding the system beyond just PC/Steam.
Once fully rolled out, Sponsored Video Rewards will be optional for players. Videos will auto-play, and progress will save even if you don't actively watch each one. The regular chests will contain random cosmetic items, while Grand Chests earned after 25 videos have a high chance of containing premium Legendary skins.
The Sponsored Video Rewards system is projected to launch widely within the next few weeks if testing goes smoothly, though an exact timeline has not been announced yet. Brawlhalla developers seem committed to giving users more ways to obtain in-game loot for free while potentially opening up a new revenue stream through video sponsorships.
Adding free cosmetic rewards funded by ads follows other popular free-to-play games utilizing similar systems where players can opt-in to earn free loot in exchange for watching sponsored content.
