After Onimusha, Capcom Plans to Reactivate Other Dormant Franchises

Onimusha: Way of the Sword came out just last week, but the game already achieved the 1 million sales milestone.

In light of this achievement, they published a press release that highlight Onimusha being a legacy series that hasn't received a new game in over 20 years.

In the same press release, they reiterate their current plans to look back at the catalogue of existing IPs to bring them back with new titles.

This has obvious implications for fighting games, since Capcom is currently sitting on Cyberbots, Red Earth, Plasma Sword/Star Gladiator, Rival Schools, Tech Romancer, Power Stone, counltess crossover fighters with Marvel, SNK, but mostly importantly, Darkstalkers.

However, it seems more likely that they will focus on IPs with broader appeal, like Dino Crisis, Ace Attorney (which has mostly been getting re-releases), Breath of Fire, or Final Fight. When it comes to fighting games, Street Fighter still has arguably too much momentum, and a new title would only cannibalise Capcom's own success.

That said, their intention to actively revisit classic series does make it more likely that they'd eventually make good on the promise of bringing back Darkstalkers.
