BreakThrough is easily one of the most impressive looking indie fighters.
We're a little late here, but when it comes to spotlighting upcoming indie games, it's better late than never. In this case, we're talking about BreakThrough, an anime indie fighter that recently got their Steam page and will be featured at the Evo's indie gallery.
The roots of this game actually go way back. It started out as a student project at UCSC, with first gameplay trailer dating back to 2020. Even back then you could see that this game was made by people who get fighting games and were likely influenced by Arc System Works titles, like Guilty Gear or BlazBlue.
Over the years it underwent a serious transformation, first switching to 3D and then continuously refining the art style to a point where it's on the level that you just don't really see from indie fighters.
Keep in mind that all of it is still very much a work in progress, so while it already looks remarkable, everything is subject to change.
As for gameplay, they never abandoned the anime influences. While we don't know too many specifics, the Steam page sheds some light on a few mechanics and fundamental elements.
For now, we know that it's a 4 button game, including a "Break" button that offers unique character actions, reminiscent of Drive in BlazBlue or Unique in Granblue Fantasy Versus.
Another core mechanic of BreakThrough is "Resolve," which seemingly acts as armor and allows you to take a hit without interrupting your own actions.
Combined with things we can see through gameplay videos, like fairly robust mobility options, this should make for a pretty fast-paced fighter reminiscent of ASW classics, so if that's down your alley, make sure to keep an eye on this game.
