The team had to figure out a whole new approach to making characters to deliver quickly and deliver quality.
The devs behind 2XKO released the latest edition of Weekend Warmup last Friday, this time focusing on the latest character release - Lux.
Character art and trailers for her were so good that it spawned a whole new wave of people rightfully throwing tomatoes at Riot for not giving this game any real chance of building momentum, especially after they built a pipeline to make 6 characters a year.
This is partly in the spotlight in this look behind the scenes. If you want to see the full post, check it out below.
As for highlights, the developers outline the parallel Design, Narrative, and Art approach, which they dubbed "DNA." It revolved around everyone getting together to flesh out a fairly complete idea of the character, forming a complete image.
Lux in particular has got the creative juices flowing, so they made mutliple "paper kits" for her. They describe paper kit as a collection of text and video description of what moves the character has, what it does, what their gameplan looks like, and what SFX/VFX/aniimation teams should consider during the creation process. Something about the flexibility of light really got people coming up with lots of ideas.
She also ended up being a shoto for an amazing reason - it simply fit the character best. In League of Legends she's going to be one of the first characters a new player will likely try, and her kit is built to be fairly straightforward and intuitive. For this reason, some of the more complex moves and interactions were cut out or moved to her Assist.
Finally, her design in 2XKO was motivated by trying to imagine a wiser and older Lux, while still retaining her image as this bright and vibrant ray of positivity. And considering the reactions to this new design, I'd say they nailed it.
