Setsuka

Story

The early years of life were so bitterly difficult for Setsuka. She’s a child of a Japanese mother and a Portuguese father — in the conservative society of Japan, that’s a “crime” enough to get into trouble. In addition to that, there was no one to protect or even comfort her. The girl was born on a ship while traveling from Portugal, but her parents died during this journey. She was met in Japan by relatives who developed an utterly aggressive attitude, considering her a demon child.

Such circumstances created an atmosphere of loneliness and despair. As soon as the girl could do that, she escaped those relatives. That dangerous world around her was more pleasant than everything she experienced within the family.

The lonely journey suddenly turned into amazing joy. The girl meets a master of Shinden-Tsushima-ryu-Battoujyutsu. He was a young man, and both started feeling pretty close to each other.

The name of that man is Shugen Tomiya. And he gave a new name to the girl. From that moment, she’s known as Setsuka.

Being near someone who cares about her helped Setsuka a lot. She bloomed with beauty and strength. A scared small girl was left behind.

She mastered the fighting style surprisingly well, so Setsuka could protect herself. Never did she think about how this skill might be helpful.

Shugen Tomiya died after getting injured in a duel. The world fell apart for Setsuka as loneliness entered her life once again.

No, she found the strength to not slip into grief. Setsuka could not avenge her master as such actions were prohibited by the teaching. Still, as a woman in love, she could take any revenge necessary. Thus, her mission against Mitsurugi started. 

Personality

Setsuka represents quite different personalities. She’s still a lonely child, frightened of the outer world. This fear makes her even cruel and motivates Setsuka to close her heart. At the same time, she carries the warmth of love within. This experience of being together with that one special person has never evaporated from her personality. Probably, this revenge could throw away the anger and let kindness become a dominant feature.

Playstyle

This Soulcalibur character uses the sword technique of samurai from Hizen Province. Setsuka succeeds in swift attacks, as she knows how to hit an opponent with lightning speed and then hide the weapon.

The umbrella makes Setsuka quite an unusual character. It opens some very interesting opportunities during a fight.

Appearance

Setsuka is rather different from the Japanese people. She has blue eyes, blond hair, and light skin — probably, she got these from her European ancestors. Still, you could see in the appearance of Setsuka some attempts to look like a Japanese girl, such as traces of dyed black hair.

Setsuka looks elegant with her dress and umbrella. It’s a disguise, though. The girl has a hidden katana in that parasol, and she knows how to use it.
