I believe, it was AmThunder who made the first 2021 MK movie discussion, but since it is out already, let's make a new one. Post here to share your thoughts on the movie. I'll be the one to start

It is so weird imo, that we got almost a straight copy of 1995 movie. MK 2021 is small, dumb and serves a kind sort of a prequel to the bigger events. It almost feels like a feature-length trailer to the actual movie. Dissapointed

To anyone disappointed with the movie, I strongly advise to watch a 2020th animated feature.  It is really good and makes me wish for an animated series adaptation

@DeadBeat, this is exactly the problem. If you look critically, the film is just exposition being dumped at Cole over and over. He blindly follows anyone who tells him to, and that's basically the progression of the plot. Cole feels absolutely devoid of any personality, so it's hard to shake away the feeling that he just goes wherever the plot needs him to. All in service of showing flashy fights in Mortal Kombat decorations

In all honesty, I can't see how Mortal Kombat can be adequately adapted to the screen. The sheer amount of the twisted lore and overall wackiness of the universe are just impossible to translate correctly. It's just as making a WH40K film. I believe, that is the reason, why they came up with the figure of Cole. He was meant to be a sort of a guide for the viewer to navigate this weird universe

@nerfeveryone, just imagine if fight scenes in this film got the same amount of care as Raid movies? Like, if this movie got Raid's director and fight choreographer? That would be so rad, that I wouldn't mind a bullshit story

Gosh, it's almost infuriating how inconsistent this film is quality-wise (and logic-wise). There are great scenes and then there is just stupid shit. Just think about how the opening scene just better than anything that came after. It is quite a basic revenge story, but at least it is finished and feels whole: Bi Han kills Hanzo's family, so he is set on revenge spree. There is a valid motivation for the fight to happen, suspense and great execution of combat scenes. Many other fights in the movie just feel... weightless. Weightless and dumb. Sonia going for a brawl with Kano whatsoever felt unmotivated and random. Also, unlike Scorpion's battle in the beginning sequence, most of the others seem to have worse choreography and appear overcut. I wish the whole movie got the same treatment as its beginning :(

@GodHand, minding, some of those really cracked me. I loved Kung Lao's fatality (I'd love it even more, if Nitara wasn't killed in such an anticlimactic way by it). Damn, all of the fatalities were delightful to watch

@KanedaRider, thank you! That's a fresh take on the movie. Even though, I would disagree that it is just as the one from 1995. See, this new MK features succeeds where the previous failed: it does deliver fan service. Honestly, that's all there is. Pure unadulterated train of  "I know this one!" moments, spiced with few self-aware jokes. The old movie tried to be that, but it turned out to be a nonsencsical piece of boredom

You know why it felt exactly like this was out of 1995? Because it's all the same shit. It is a video game movie, branded by video game curse. It makes no sense, absolutely none, when divorced from the source material. Why does Jax had to fight Sub-Zero in the first place? Where does the Reptile come from? What are Jax's arms? It doesn't matter, but what matters to the creators of it is that it had to be about those characters fighting each other, just like in the game. It may be entertaining if you already are into MK, otherwise it is hot garbage

My greatest regret is that we never had to see the actual Mortal Kombat tournament. Literally everyone talks about it, we get a ton of exposition dumped to clear how important it is over and over again, and in the end it's just "To be continued"? Meeeeeh
